Description
We purchased these pieces of original stained glass from the daughter of a former German soldier who picked them up in St. Lo. Presumably this was done after the US bombardment on June 6 and 7, 1944. This soldier was later captured on the Russian Front and imprisoned until he slipped away in 1948 and made his way home. Two of the pieces are about 2.25 inches in diameter and depict beautiful roses, while the blue pieces would have fit around other curved pieces. One of the roses is dark red and the other pinkish.
The St. Lo Cathedral was built in the 1300s and partially destroyed in 1944. After the war the cathedral was repaired and the stained glass replaced. So possibly one could identify where the two small rose disks had originally been placed before they ended up in the German soldier's knapsack.
